    1. I looked forward to this novel when Mark Carver announced it earlier this year. Even at that stage its premise intrigued me. I remember in secondary school how fascinated I was while learning about the Black Death (Bubonic Plaque). Even the history book that we studied from brought to life this period of dark history and portrayed the devastation and decimation of the human population as it spread over Europe. It was this vivid recording that grew my fascination for this period. Well, I can say [...]

    2. Nikolai the Penitent takes place during a very dark period of European history -- the zenith of the Black Plague. Against this backdrop of plague ridden England, we follow a young five year Nikolai Solberg in the fall of 1333 A. D. He and his family have just been told to pack up and move to another town because they've been sold to another duke. After a tragic journey, he and his family arrive where he spends the next fifteen years as a blacksmith. At twenty years old, things start to change for [...]

    3. This was, truly, a harrowing, challenging, dark Christian book with everything in such a book I want in it. Relatable flawed characters, realistic atmosphere, wanton gritty content, forward dialogue, disturbing mental issues, and more.WARNING! Adult read only!

    4. I liked this book, but I'm not usually a grimdark fan. But it was historically enlightening, inwardly reflective, and theologically stimulating. Also politically and religiously moving, in good and bad ways. Highly recommended for Christian spec lovers.

    5. Gritty piece set in a time period that is often overlooked or romanticized. Interesting. Not for the weak stomach!
