    1. This thing is an absolute blast, and can be easily summed up in three words: Firefighters vs. Dragons. Yeah, you did hear that right – that’s how absolutely gonzo nuts this book is. There’s a lot more than that going on, of course, but that’s the essence of it. You’ve also got a semi-post apocalyptic 22nd century North America devastated by, you guessed it, dragons. The US government has devolved into a series of corrupt city-states each fighting for their own survival against the scal [...]

    2. Original review by Durand Welsch to be published in Grimdark Magazine #15 (15th Jan 2018).Dragons, fire-fighters, post-collapse America, powered mech suits, robots, ghosts: Smoke Eaters by Sean Grigsby is a heady mash-up of tropes and genres. The novel could loosely be described as a mix of cop drama, urban fantasy and Robotech that is, fortunately, held together by refreshingly authentic characters. And while the worldbuilding is unapologetically ludicrous, it’s a self-aware sort of ludicrous [...]

    3. Sean Grigsby makes a scorching debut with Smoke Eaters, a fun sci-fi romp set a hundred years hence in the ashes of America's Midwest. It's the early 2100s and dragons have returned, these massive creatures of myth churning their way up from the Earth's core to wreak firey havoc all across the world. The US is divided into a series of nation states, Canada has built a wall to keep Americans out, and robots are taking everyone's jobs. In Ohio, an elite team of dragon fighters, known as Smoke Eater [...]

    4. I was so excited when I heard about this book, as I come from a family of firefighters and it's one emergency service you don't read about in fantasy. Grigsby's experience as a serving firefighter is abundantly clear on every page, from the small gems of knowledge he drops about the colour and consistency of smoke, pausing before entering buildings, the use of firefighting tools and equipment etc It's very, very clear he knows what he's talking about, and that level of insider knowledge is cruci [...]

    5. Many thanks to NetGalley and Angry Robot Books for a digital galley of this novel.Captain Cole Brannigan, firefighter, almost 60 years old, retiring at the end of the week. Remember all of that because you are going to be seeing a lot about Brannigan if you pay attention to books and chatter about books. This is one humdinger of a fantasy novel. There is practically an adventure on every page. When I finished reading I was huffing and puffing from the non-stop action so much you would have thoug [...]

    6. First things first: Thanks to Angry Robot and NetGalley for providing an e-ARC for review. Being provided this ARC in no way, shape, or form influenced my thoughts on this novel. I also want to thank Peter McLean for his advanced praise of Smoke Eaters. His words definitely influenced this novel being at the top of my TBR when I received the ARC and held true throughout my reading experience. Think Ghostbusters meets Reign of FireCole Brannigan has only one thing on his mind: retirement. Thirty [...]

    7. It's firefighters vs. dragons. And it's exactly what you think it will be when you read 'firefighters vs. dragons.' If you're looking for a thoughtful piece of literature that addresses the human condition, you're in the wrong place. If you want some kick-ass 22nd century action with laser swords and dragons that destroy cities, then you're going to be happy.

    8. When I was three, we had a house fire. I was tucked in my bed in a tiny upstairs bedroom. A fireman rescued me, and when he set me in my mother's arms, I told her "he carried me out, just like Superman." I knew a good hero when I saw one. When I was offered the chance to read an ARC of Smoke Eaters, even though I wasn't sure if this was my kind of book, I said sure, because Firefighters vs Dragons? Heck yeah. This was a good romp in a future world, where not only has the United States devolved in [...]

    9. This book had everything I never knew I wanted. It’s action-packed and humorous, yet not afraid to slow down and be reflective every once in a while. Smoke Eaters by Sean Grigsby is (what I’d call) an Urban Science Fantasy novel that does practically everything right. 5 stars from me.Author: Sean GrigsbyPublisher: Angry Robot BooksPublished Date: 2018summaryWe’re in the 22nd century, so it’s the future but not that far ahead. Some things are still the same. There are police, firefighters [...]

    10. ★ ★ ★ ★ 1/2 (rounded up) This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader.--- Really, the case for you (or anyone) reading this book is simply and convincingly made in 13 words:Firefighters vs. Dragons in an Urban Fantasy novel set in a futuristic dystopia.I'll just wait here while you open another tab to put in your order. There's really nothing more that I need to say, is there? What if I throw in robot dogs?Since you're here anyway, I'll talk a little more about the book. In the e [...]

    11. A crash-through-the-gate-in-fourth-gear debut novel, with all the high velocity (and splinters) that implies.Firefighters versus dragons! These are not friendly, soul-bonding dragons, or gorgeous dragons that somehow shift tremendous mass into otherwhere in order to turn into sexy humans: these are mean, smart, lethal dragons that live to destroy, and to gobble humans. And they are teamed up somehow with dragon-killed humans who turn into seriously creepy wraiths.Firefighter chief Cole Brannigan [...]

    12. I received an advanced copy of Smoke Eaters by Sean Gringby; from NetGalley and Angry Robot Publishing in exchange for an honest review. First off let’s start with the cover; this cover is an eye catcher, not for the colors (merely because it is mostly red, silver, and blue) but for the context. A dragon, with smoke coming from its mouth/nostrils on a fireman’s shield, with two crossing lacings. I think this is the perfect cover for this amazing book, subtle but filled with jems! This book s [...]

    13. Thanks given to Netgalley and Angry Robot for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. It didn’t take much to sell me on Smoke Eaters. I mean, dragons vs. firefighters, come on! It’s a near-future romp where dragons emerge from the earth to terrorize a fractured America, and the only line of defence are the smoke eaters (firefighters able to breathe dragon smoke who are outfitted with combat tech and laser swords). We follow Cole Brannigan, an older firefighter who is forcefully re [...]

    14. So let's get this straight. There are basically two kinds of books: Those that reveal the depths and heights of humanity, making us question the values that shape our lives, our relationships, our very identitiesAnd there are books about firefighters killing dragons. This is a book about firefighters killing dragons. This is not a book you spend long hours pouring over, researching the echoes of the words within your soul, or weeping for what might have been. This is a "I've had it up to here wit [...]

    15. A fun, kick-ass read with dragons and a fire department specifically to fight them. More review to come, BUT!! If you pre-order the book by March 6th, $1 from each book sold goes to the Leary Firefighters Foundation!! More info below:angryrobotbooks/2018/

    16. Smoke Eaters starts with a delightful premise and quickly spirals out of control. Cole Brannigan is about to retire from his firefighting career when he is unexpectedly recruited to join the Smoke Eaters, a secret group of dragon fighters. Brannigan is soon thrown into a world of political intrigue, world travel, superpowers, and war and he might just be the only man able to save the world.I loved the start of this book - firefighters specially equipped to fight dragons? What a cool idea! And th [...]

    17. More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog surrealtalvi.wordpress/Starting out with Smoke Eaters, I was completely enamored. Grizzled elderly firefighter discovers he has an unusual gift to help fight dragons that have appeared in a post apocalyptic Ohio? Sign me on! Unfortunately, the more I read, the more this felt like a middle age/40s/50s year old male Mary Sue - where the girls fall all over him, he gets to beat the crap out of the bad guys, and he gets to save people and be a hero. It was a b [...]

    18. Sean Grigsby's debut novel draws on his experience as a firefighter to create a fun, original take on the dragon/fantasy genre. It follows the story of Brannigan, a career firefighter on the verge of retirement who finds himself recruited by a crack force of dragon hunters. Brannigan presents a different type of hero to the one we are used to and his cynical wise cracks and frequent toilet stops make him someone that is easy to identify with. Add to that a light and witty tone, along with plenty [...]

    20. Dragons, fire fighters, robotic dogs, cool future technology and good world building. This book has all of hose things and more. Overall I enjoyed reading this, the writers fire fighting background shows in the descriptions of the fires which makes the whole thing come to life so much more. I enjoyed the story - dragons have returned to Earth, burrowing up from underground in a sudden unexpected emergence. Who on earth can stand against these fire breathing monsters - why the fire department of [...]

    21. This is a mash-up of science fiction and fantasy. It's a blazing debut, well worth your time. The Smoke Eaters fight dragons and dragon-fires with high-tech gadgets in a post-collapse 22nd century America. It's a bleak future vision. Firefighter captain Cole Brannigan is pressed to take up service with the Smoke Eaters after 30 years in the fire service because they discover that he can breathe dragon smoke without choking on it. He'd been planning his retirement with his wife, but now his futur [...]

    22. *Free copy for an honest review.I had a lot of fun reading this book. It was one of those books that made me worry I'd miss a bus stop because it was so engaging. It's not too surprising, this book has so many elements that I love. You've got a cast of characters, with attitude and mild superpowers, who are up against ancient monsters, robots and a corrupt government. Seriously, what's not to enjoy? The world this takes place in is a very interesting blend of fantasy and science fiction. Using co [...]

    23. Killer dragons, fireman and menacing droids = a fast paced, hilarious book you need to have in your life . The antics and camaraderie of Cole Brannigan and the other rookies had me laughing out loud frequently on my bus commute. I sincerely hope there are follow up books that will give us closer looks at the other team members. I get the feeling that Renfro must have some hidden secrets I just need to know more of. *Received an ARC from NetGalley & Angry Robot Books for an honest review.

    24. This is a rollicking good read! Dragons and gadgets and blood-thirsty ghosts. What's not to like? The voice is great (and funny) and the world building is top-notch. The author's inside knowledge of firefighting adds an additional layer of authenticity. A really fun, engrossing read.

    25. LOVED this book! Paranormal in future with dragons having emerged like locust from the earth. Firefighter hero fights dragon and can breath smoke so her unwillingly becomes a Smoke Eater. Great story of his learning how to become a smoke eater. Sure hope this is the start of a series because it ROCKS! Totally recommend this book!

    26. This book absolutely lives up to its hype. Well written, clever, unique and just a damned fine read. Sean Grigsby has come up with a unique story idea that simply jumps off the page. Dragons and Firefighters? Sign me up. I wanted the book straight away and it didn't disappoint. Sean's experience as a firefighter shows in every beat of each fire scene. (I was wondering by the end if he also has experience with fighting dragons!) Set in the future, the technology is very cool but the threat that c [...]
